Notwithstanding recent tensions with Turkey, the president of NATO urged resuming the membership process for the two Nordic nations during a visit to Ankara.
Jens Stoltenberg, the head of NATO, paid a visit to Ankara on February 16 to include “NOW” Finland and Sweden, whose applications to join the Atlantic Alliance had been rejected by Turkey since May.
I believe that Finland and Sweden’s adhésion should be ratified at this time. During a press conference with Mevlut Cavusoglu, the Turkish foreign minister said Jens Stoltenberg.

Last Tuesday, the Secretary-General of NATO officially mentioned the possibility of Finland joining the Alliance before Sweden for the first time. Mevlut Cavusoglu, the head of Turkish diplomacy, repeated Thursday that it “would not be possible to argue that Sweden has fully fulfilled its duties under the MoU” signed in June between Turkey, Sweden, and Finland. Among other things, Turkey accuses Sweden of harbouring what it refers to as “terrorists,” particularly members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). At a conference in Madrid in July 2022, the leaders of NATO’s 30 members voted to extend invitations to Sweden and Finland to join the Alliance. The accession protocols were signed by thirty nations and ratified by 28. Only Hungary and Turkey have not yet signed their accord.
The negotiations abruptly halted in January when Ankara expressed displeasure at the Swedish government’s decision to permit a demonstration in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm, during which a Koran was burned. A tripartite meeting that was scheduled for February was also postponed. NATO member nations provided 20,000 tents and 40 shipping containers for earthquake victims.
