According to British media, Scottish nationalist Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon will announce her resignation on Wednesday after eight years in office due to the recent law promoting gender transition.
At 11 a.m. local time and GMT, the 52-year-old leader, who has long maintained his high popularity and led the charge for a fresh independence referendum, will address the media. He had not yet disclosed the precise date of his anticipated resignation or the reasons behind it.
After the unexpected resignation of Jacinda Ardern as prime minister of New Zealand in January, Ms. Sturgeon stated that she still had “full vitality” and did not feel as though her time to leave was approaching.
The Scottish government and Scottish National Party (SNP) were led by Nicola Sturgeon after the resignation of Alex Salmond in 2014. Then, 55% of Scots chose to stay within the United Kingdom.
She has recently picked up the campaign for independence with perseverance and tenacity, inspired by Brexit, which the Scots had largely rejected. She has been lobbying for the planning of a fresh vote, which London has categorically opposed.
With the help of the Greens, she was able to secure a pro-independence majority in the local Parliament in May 2021, adding to her long list of electoral victories.
However, it was undermined by the passing in December of a very contentious bill allowing gender transition from the age of 16 without seeking medical consultation.
London declared it want to be opposed. A story involving a transgender lady who had been imprisoned in a women’s jail after being found guilty of raping women before going through her transition provided fodder for its opponents shortly after the vote.
She eventually moved to a prison for men. Nicola Sturgeon, who is still involved in politics, was born in the industrial town of Irvine, southwest of Glasgow, to an electrician father and a nursing mother. At the age of 16, she became an assistant youth coordinator for the SNP.
Her husband, Peter Murrell, is the leader of the party. The couple, who are not parents, originally connected at a gathering of SNP youth members more than 20 years ago. Nicola Sturgeon was one of the party’s first delegates in the Scottish Parliament when it was established in 1999.
